I'm in Greenville, Maine today finishing up a photo project in the Moosehead Lake Region for the Natural Resources Council of Maine.  NRCM is working to help the region come up with a vision for its future that will allow sustainable growth while maintaining the outstanding natural character of the area.  The impetus for the NRCM vision is a proposal from Plum Creek Timber (which owns nearly 1 million acres in the region) to sell off 1000 house lots, many of which are located on pristine shoreline.  They also are proposing a couple of resorts that would add additional housing.  After fifteen years of exploring New England, I can honestly say that there is nowhere else in New England like the Moosehead Region.  Plum Creek's plan for the future would seriously change the character of the area, and in a negative way in my opinion.  I'm not very good at reciting facts, so I'll let you check them out yourself at the NRCM website, http://www.maineenvironment.org/.  To be fair to Plum Creek, they are offering some significant conservation easements as part of their Moosehead plan, which you can read about at: http://www.plumcreek.com/downloads/news/PlumCreek_Moosehead_Conservation.pdf.  I'm not sure that what they are offering is a good enough trade off for what they'll be taking away, but I'll let you read up on this and decide for yourself.

A frosty morning.

Brassua Lake is connected to Moosehead by the Moose River and is one of the lakes slated for development by Plum Creek.

Before I sign off I need to say thank you to Pat at Northwoods Outfitters on Main Street in Greenville, for providing some much needed logistical support during my shoot.  If you find yourself in Greenville and need great outdoor gear, an espresso drink, a guided Moose Tour, etc., Northwoods Outfitters is the place!

Until next time...
